The Mazda Motor Corporation has announced (week ending Aug 11 its vision for technology development that looks ahead to the year 2030.

Under the heading (first used in 2007) 'Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030,'  the company disclosed plans to introduce an engine called SkyActiv-X in 2019. SkyActiv-X will be the world's first commercial gasoline engine to use compression ignition.

Mazda's approach

The car firm intends to measures for carbon dioxide considering emissions over a vehicle's entire life cycle - aiming to reduce emissions to 50 per cent of 2010 levels by 2030 and to achieve a 90 per cent reduction by 2050. This will be done by prioritising efficiency improvements.

So at this time, rather, Mazda continues in its aim to perfect the internal combustion engine, which it claims will help power the majority of cars worldwide for many years to come and can therefore make the greatest contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and combine the results with effective electrification technologies

As a sales policy, from 2019, Mazda will start introducing electric vehicles and other electric drive technologies in regions that use a high ratio of clean energy for power generation or restrict certain vehicles to reduce air pollution

Accidents

In another area, Mazda has committed to develop more safety technologies under the Mazda Proactive Safety philosophy, working toward the goal of eliminating traffic accidents via safety fundamentals, such as correct driving position, pedal layout and good visibility.

SkyActiv-X next-generation engine

SkyActiv-X is the world's first commercial gasoline engine to use compression ignition, in which the fuel-air mixture ignites spontaneously when compressed by the piston - maximizing the zone in which compression ignition is possible and achieving a seamless transition between compression ignition and spark ignition. A supercharger is also fitted to improve fuel economy. Burn is 20-20 times better and overall, torque is improved by 10-30 per cent over Mazda's current engines.
