Stechford leisure opens

Serco Leisure has opened the doors for the first time to a state-of-the-art new leisure centre in Stechford, Birmingham, as part of an investment programme which is transforming leisure provision in the city.

The centre is the second of four new leisure centres being built in Birmingham overseen by Serco Leisure, underpinned by a city-wide investment of nearly £40 million by Birmingham City Council and Sport England. Serco Leisure were appointed the managing agent for eight of the City Council’s leisure centres in 2015, in partnership with Birmingham Community Leisure Trust.

The £9 million new centre in Stechford replaces the former Stechford Cascades centre, and offers a host of new facilities designed to meet the health and fitness needs of the local community, with options for all ages, interests and fitness levels.

The new centre has been completed on budget and on schedule, taking just over year to build. Construction is continuing on a third new leisure centre at Northfield in the south of the city and will begin on the fourth at Icknield Port Loop in Edgbaston later in the year. The first of the four centres was successfully opened in Erdington in September last year and is already proving popular with local residents.

Cllr Ian Ward, Birmingham City Council’s Deputy Leader, said: “As the recently named Host City for the Commonwealth Games in 2022, it is vital we continue to support first-class grassroots sporting facilities for Birmingham and I thank our partners for working with us to provide cost effective and modern buildings such as this. Despite the considerable financial challenge we face, this shows we will continue to support and encourage people to remain active and pursue a healthy lifestyle.”

SWC & ARL Merge Window Cleaning Operations

Specialist Window Cleaning and ARL Support Services, have merged and relaunched under the SWC brand.

The combined business will be headed by Gareth Thomas as MD, with Chris Thomas taking up the role of Commercial Director. Thomas said: "The move provides customers with greater access to a wide range of specialist window cleaning services under one roof and with a national reach."

SWC specialises in high-level, cradle and rope access window cleaning. ARL provides window cleaning solutions to many retailers, including Pizza Express, Matalan, Zizzi, All Bar One and Harvester.

Combined, the new company has a turnover of around £4.5 million and employs more than 70 cleaning staff across the country. Both businesses were acquired by Incentive in 2016.

The newly formed company will be split into two main divisions. A commercial team will focus on providing window cleaning services on high level buildings on a periodical basis. The other side is a retail team which will provide regular window cleaning to clients in the retail industry, including pubs, bars and clothing stores.

ISS hosts family events across its workplaces

ISS recently entered into the festive mood, inviting employees to bring in their families and friends to work, to mingle and be merry

In the week before Christmas, several ISS offices joined in the festivities, welcoming parents, children, siblings and friends into the office for refreshments and the opportunity to spread Christmas cheer. Activities varied from site to site, with letter writing to Santa, musical reindeer statues and mince pies and cupcakes.

"Work is such an important part of our lives, so the idea behind the event was to encourage colleagues to bring their family or nearest and dearest to the office, so they can show them where they work and what they do," commented Stephanie Hamilton, Head of People and Culture. "We have had some really nice feedback from employees about how they enjoyed showing their families where they work."

Some sites also took the opportunity of the event to gather collections for local foodbanks, to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Facing Christmas with little or no money and struggling to make ends meet was a reality for many – fortunately foodbanks offer a lifeline to those who find themselves in crisis.
