Stately Home Fire Investigation to Take Time

01 May 2015 | Updated 01 January 1970

The full cause of the destructive fire at Clandon Park House is unlikely to be known soon because of its 'complexity'.

In a press statement a spokesman for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said: “The investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing but due to the complexity of the incident, this will take some time to complete.

“Guildford Borough Council and the National Trust are carrying out structural assessments to decide on the future of Clandon Park House while artefacts rescued from the building have been stored away safely.”

As reported in TWinFM, the fire broke out in the basement of the eighteenth century stately house which is owned and run by the National Trust.

"There is a pile of debris in the central doorway which indicates there is plenty of material we may be able to sift through and find interesting things,” explained Christopher Rowell, Furniture Curator, National Trust. “It was covered with a fantastic ceiling with wonderful plasterwork. All of that has collapsed to the floor. We are hoping there are lots of original pieces in the rubble and we have to sift through that to find them.”
