Wales Tyre Burnout Sees 21 Appliances Turnout

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and partner agencies were dealing with a major fire incident at a tyre recycling plant in Aberafan, Port Talbot on the morning of July 13.

The first call was received by Fire Control at 22.55hrs on the July 12 and at its height there were 21 appliances and 100 personnel on site dealing with the particularly complex fire. It involved deep seated fires within a large quantity of waste tyre product.

A number of agencies including Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, South Wales Police, Welsh Ambulance Service Trust, Public Health Wales, Natural Resources Wales, Neath Port Talbot Local Authority and Welsh Water worked together to attempt to bring the blaze under control and ensure the safety of workers and local residents.

The smoke plume from the was visible to those in the area. The smoke plume is was monitored closely by Natural Resources Wales and Public Health Wales using the National Air Quality Network monitoring systems and staff on site.

Smoke from fires such as these may contain substances that can irritate the eyes, nose and throat. Respiratory symptoms can include coughing, wheezing and breathlessness. Public Health Wales is advising people to minimise their exposure to smoke by keeping doors and windows closed and turning any ventilation systems off.
