Waves Get the Nod as Lagoon Energy is Approved Of

Plans to have six sites of tidal lagoons generating electricity have been unveiled this week.

The sites are all on the western side of England and Wales – four in the Principality at Swansea, Cardiff, Newport, and Colwyn Bay and the remaining two in Somerset and Cumbria.

Tidal Lagoon Power is confident that it will be able to generate 8% of the UK’s electricity needs once the sites are up and running for an investment of £30 billion, dismissing the claims that the cost of the first scheme in Swansea will be very high.

The scale of all the six sites will require substantial engineering skill – the Swansea lagoon will have a seal wall for 5 miles and reach more than 2 miles out to sea.

The plan for the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon, has shortlisted three potential sites in the Swansea Bay City Region (comprising Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire) for a 100,000sq.ft turbine assembly plant that will scale operations as the sector develops at home and internationally.

Initially employing 100 skilled workers and capable of shipping one 7.35m diameter runner turbine a month, the facility is expected to scale operations by six times by 2018, shipping at least one turbine a week as the UK moves to the construction of full-scale tidal lagoons.

Tidal Lagoon Power cites a report by the Centre for Economics and Business Research last year that found that the emergence of a global tidal lagoon industry could present an export industry valued at £70 billion to the UK economy.

The project has received the approval of Ed Davey, Energy Secretary who said the government was keen to back the scheme.

On a local level, the enthusiasm was equally enthusiastic. “The development of the tidal lagoon will put the area on the map as a world leading location for marine energy technology,” declared Sir Terry Matthews, Chair of the Swansea Bay City Region Board. “The assembly facility announced today, together with the pioneering research and development capabilities at universities in the Swansea Bay City Region mean there is huge potential for new investment, business opportunities, jobs and growth.”
