Westway’s ‘centre of excellence’ in Greenford, West London, will help it achieve its company-wide training programme that began 12 months ago and the space for the centre was created through the refurbishment of the company’s former headquarters with the building work taking three months to complete.
Westway has created its own in-house training programme for all of its employees, including administrative staff. For example, its service desk team recently completed an electrical training course designed specifically for non-technical/operational employees. The facility also enables Westway to carry out the IOSH approved Managing Safely and Working Safely courses in-house for all employees.
The centre focuses on practical training and gives students hands-on experience across a possible six specialties – electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, lighting, combustion and building management system (BMS) controls. It gives Westway the opportunity to recreate, exactly, a client’s environment and enables employees to familiarise themselves with the onsite set up as well as train and test procedures in a completely ‘risk-free’ environment. The centre also has a theoretical training and testing area which has 12 computers and can train six students at the time.
“This training requires a significant investment but we are confident we will develop a much more highly skilled and technically competent employee,” said Stuart Marsh, Technical Services Director, Westway.” As a result they will be more productive and confident in the field. It will also help ensure that every employee, irrespective of their role, will understand the operational nature of the business.”
Westway claims it is the only technical building services provider in the UK to have such a large scale dedicated training centre for its staff.
