A new green hydrogen refuelling station for HGVs is due to be built in Tees Valley, thanks to £7 million of government funding.

The first of its kind in the country, the hydrogen hub will provide refuelling access to at least 25 new zero-emission heavy goods vehicles making deliveries in the local area.

Fuel distributor Exolum has been awarded the funding to build the station at Exolum’s Riverside terminal in Stockton-on-Tees, near Middlesbrough town centre and at the intersection of the A19 and A66. The site is expected to be fully operational by 2025.

Tees Valley Combined Authority will also run a competition for local colleges and training institutions to purchase hydrogen training equipment to upskill the local workforce.

According to a press release from the Department for Transport and Department for Energy Security and Net-Zero, the project is already creating significant levels of industry interest, with several developers having announced their intentions to build large-scale green hydrogen production in the area.

Tees Valley Mayor, Ben Houchen, said: “Our area is leading the way in developing the cleaner, healthier and safer transport of the future. This is another great example of how we are creating innovative solutions, such as greener deliveries to our supermarkets. As the UK’s first hydrogen transport hub, we are in a fantastic position to take advantage of projects such as this, which will deliver further jobs and investment needed to drive our local economy forward.”

Green hydrogen, also known as electrolytic hydrogen, has been billed as a potential option for a secure supply of green energy to the UK. The government has set a target of 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030, at least half of which will be green.
