Over 86,000 people watched Real Madrid win the 2024 UEFA Champions League final at Wembley Stadium in June 2024. An average football match generates 4.2 tonnes of waste but Veolia collected 6.2 tonnes of waste from the UEFA Champions League Final’s external operations alone, to separate for effective recycling. That’s the same weight as 826 UEFA Champions League winners trophies.
A pilot project also took place to optimise food waste management, contributing to a more sustainable hospitality experience. Carbon labels were added to the menu boards in the concession areas at Wembley Stadium, bringing transparency to fan food choices.
Over 100,000 meals were served on the day in Notpla’s seaweed-lined, sustainable packaging. The packaging included a QR code for fans to take part in a quiz about food sustainability, with the opportunity to win tickets during next year’s competition.
The tournament was aired through a full cloud-based production, minimising carbon emissions associated with traditional broadcasting. This type of remote transmission reduces the need for an on-site crew by 50 per cent and cutting down the amount of technical infrastructure required for gallery productions by up to 70 per cent.
