The Barbican Centre has shared new CGIs showing how the site might look in the future, as the second stage of public consultation for its renewal programme begins.

The images, from architects Allies and Morrison working with Asif Khan Studio, show the Barbican’s reimagined conservatory, lakeside and foyers.

In the images, the conservatory has a new water feature and “bold, theatrical planting”, and the lakeside terrace features fully functioning fountains and rich new landscaping. The foyers, currently described as “confusing” and “cluttered” with narrow, heavy manual doors and limited level-access routes, are now open and inclusive with more accessible facilities and restored lighting.

A brutalist icon, the Barbican was designed by Chamberlin Powell and Bon and built between 1965 and 1982. The age of the Grade II-listed building means the site has faced persistent challenges such as waterproofing failure in the conservatory, brickwork in poor condition and outdated public facilities.

The City of London Corporation will fund 80 per cent of this first phase of works. As a not-for-profit, the Barbican will fundraise for further support to ensure the full programme of works can be delivered.

Philippa Simpson, Barbican’s Director for Buildings and Renewal, said, “We’ve been incredibly encouraged by the public’s enthusiasm for our plans. These new images reflect a vision for the Barbican Centre that stays true to our unique heritage and bold character while making us an inclusive, sustainable and meaningful place for everyone.”

Subject to planning approval, construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the first phase due for completion in 2030, ahead of the Barbican’s 50th anniversary in 2032.
