The remains of London’s first Roman Basilica have been discovered underneath the basement of 85 Gracechurch Street, near Leadenhall Market in the City of London.

The site is part of the Roman Forum, an open-air square which was a social hub as well as the seat of political, judicial and commercial activities. 2,000 year old foundations and walls made of flint, ragstone and Roman tile were uncovered, thought to be within an area of the Basilica known as the Tribunal. On this raised stage, magistrates, political leaders, and important officials would have made major decisions about the government of London.

The discovery was made during archaeological investigations by the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) after planning permission was granted for a new commercial building at 85 Gracechurch Street.

Although historians were already aware of the Basilica’s location, the extent of its surviving remains were unknown. “It's like discovering the Speaker’s Chair and chamber of the House of Commons, 2,000 years into the future,” said Sophie Jackson, Director of Development at MOLA.

Site owner Hertshten Properties intends to showcase the remains in its redevelopment plans, incorporating them into a new public exhibition and immersive experience.

Following a new planning application, full excavations will begin on the site, with the new experience expected to be open from 2029/2030.
