Structural Issues at Louvre Museum Causes Temporary Closure

Structural Issues at Louvre Museum Causes Temporary Closure
19 November 2025

The Campana Gallery at The Louvre is temporarily closed due to the fragility of the supporting beams in the south wing.

The second floor of the south wing within the museum’s Sully quadrangle is showing weakness, according to a technical report. Certain beams supporting the floors of the second floor of the south wing have been described as “particularly fragile”.

The Chief Architect of Historical Monuments at the Louvre has decided to close access to the second-floor staff offices and the Campana gallery located on the first floor of the south wing.

65 museum staff members will vacate their offices over the next three days.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced this year that the museum would undergo a major overhaul, including a new entrance and a dedicated room for Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

The Louvre is still recovering from a huge security breach on 19 October 2025, where jewellery with an estimated value of more than $100 million was stolen. Four people have been arrested, but the jewellery remains missing.
