Waste Management Platform to Gamify Recycling in Workplaces

Waste Management Platform to Gamify Recycling in Workplaces

A waste management company is rewarding correct waste segregation in workplaces by linking it to a weekly prize jackpot.

SmartSegregation offers entry into weekly jackpots in exchange for putting the right waste in the right bin. By displaying posters with QR codes on existing bins, businesses can reward staff and visitors to segregate waste correctly.

Posters give exact instructions on the type of waste that can be put in the bin, alongside a QR code. After scanning, users take a photo of the item they’re disposing of, which is then authenticated using AI. Users then gain entry into weekly jackpots.

The platform, which is currently under patent review, is aimed at settings where FM teams want to encourage people to use bins correctly to prevent waste contamination. The practice of placing something in the wrong bin, wrongly assuming it can be recycled is known as “wishcycling”. This contamination can reduce the value of the recyclable materials, or lead to them being disposed of rather than recycled.

“SmartSegregation is designed to seamlessly integrate into any environment, drastically reducing the barriers typically associated with adopting new technologies,” said David Landsberg, of SmartSegregation. “Our system is not only innovative and affordable but also incredibly easy to set up, reflecting our commitment to promoting sustainable practices effortlessly.”
