Read Full ArticlePantone’s Colour of The Year has been revealed as the crimson red tone "Viva Magenta" and is predicted to dominate interiors, graphic design and packaging in 2023.
Viva Magenta 18-750 is described as a “nuanced crimson red tone that presents a balance between warm and cool” that will inspire people to act with confidence and bravery.
Viva Magenta was chosen to reflect 2023’s focus on climate change, sustainability and land protection. It has roots in our desire to return to physical activities post-pandemic, inspired by lifestyle trends such as travel, sports, and outdoor recreation. It also compliments the contemporary interest in plants, florals, living walls, and restorative outdoor spaces.
A focus on health and wellbeing after a period of public health crisis also motivates our need to connect to nature through our surroundings. The colour evokes the natural world, as Viva Magenta originates from the natural carmine dye from the cochineal beetle.
According to the Pantone Colour Institute, reds are power colours that celebrate life, fun and fierce grace, and speak to our desire to take on new challenges and try the unconventional while meeting others with compassion. In colour theory, Magenta tones are known for warding off confrontation, discouraging aggression and inspiring compassion and relaxation.

Viva Magenta is predicted to “elicit a strong consumer reaction” in retail and ecommerce environments, as it draws the eye and muscle out the colours surrounding them.
