Read Full ArticleThe world's largest globe-shaped building, the Avicii Arena in Stockholm, has reopened after an extensive renovation.
Owned by the city of Stockholm, the arena opened in 1989 as The Stockholm Globe Arena and was renamed in honour of the late Swedish artist Avicii. With a diameter of 110 metres and a roof of 85 metres, it is the world's largest globe-shaped building.
The arena has recently been upgraded with a retractable acoustic panel system, modernised facilities and upgraded event spaces.

A team including HOK, C.F. Møller Architects and sbp have modernised the building with a sophisticated steel ring construction supporting a retractable roof with acoustic panels and rigging system. The rigging grid is suspended within the inner curved ring structure and the outer perimeter compression ring. The cable net structure supports the retractable panels and all rigging elements and is equipped with a walkable mesh. New gondola seating and hospitality lounges also elevate the guest experience.
The arena reopened on 1 February 2025 with a sold-out show by Swedish band Kite, who performed their first-ever concert on ice. It’s also set to host the men's ice hockey World Cup.
“Updating a structure as unique as the Avicii Arena requires a careful balance of preservation and innovation,” said Knut Stockhusen, Board Member and Managing Director at sbp. “This project showcases how engineering excellence contributes to architectural heritage and modern performance.”
“This project celebrates the past while embracing the future,” said Kirsty Mitchell, Senior Project Manager at HOK. “Our design solutions honour the arena’s iconic architecture while introducing innovative and forward-thinking features that ensure its relevance for decades to come.”
