Biden Mandates COVID-19 Vaccine Policy for Businesses

President Biden has announced new measures that mean US businesses of more than 100 workers will legally require staff to either have the COVID vaccine or provide a weekly test result.

In a televised address, President Biden said: "This is not about freedom, or personal choice, it's about protecting yourself and those around you.”

According to Reuters, the legislation would apply to about two-thirds of all US employees.

The US Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will have the authority to hand out fines to private companies who do not comply.

What About in The UK?

The government’s latest guidance on working safely during coronavirus does not provide any advice on employee vaccination status.

For those who want to go to nightclubs and busy indoor venues, they will be required to show proof of either a negative coronavirus test or that they have been vaccinated, otherwise known as a “vaccine passport”, but there appears to be no sign of such a measure for workplaces.

Employees may refuse to take the vaccine because they’re not contractually, nor legally, currently obliged to do so.
