Government Shrinks Estate With 1 Victoria Street Closure

Government Shrinks Estate With 1 Victoria Street Closure
23 February 2024

The government has closed its offices at 1 Victoria Street in a move to shrink its real estate footprint.

The Government Property Agency (GPA) says the closure will save approximately £30 million in annual running costs.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and Department for Business and Trade were based at the 30,000 square metre office but will be moved into hub buildings at 3-8 Whitehall Place, 55 Whitehall and 22-26 Whitehall.

The GPA is aiming to reduce the government’s Central London estate by 55 per cent, moving civil service roles out of London into regional hubs such as Fletton Quays in Peterborough or 2 Ruskin Square in Croydon.

The closure of 1 Victoria Street is part of The Whitehall Campus Programme, where the GPA plans to release over 312,000 square metres of space to provide 17 core buildings for 45,000 civil servants.
