The Leeds College of Building has welcomed the announcement on expanding technical education pathways for young people from the age of 14, placing technical and academic routes on an equal footing and strengthening links between education, employers and regional growth priorities.

The College believes the reforms are a significant endorsement of the specialist, employer-led approach it has championed for decades and reflect the model it already delivers as a UK's Construction Technical Excellence College (CTEC). The announcement presents a major opportunity to build on that success by expanding the College's capacity to educate more learners, support more employers and help meet the UK's growing demand for skilled construction professionals.

As the UK's only specialist further education college dedicated exclusively to construction and the built environment, Leeds College of Building has long worked in partnership with employers to design technical education around real labour market demand. Through apprenticeships, full-time study, higher technical qualifications and adult skills programmes, the College provides clear progression routes into high-value careers while helping address critical skills shortages across housing, infrastructure, retrofit and the transition to net zero.

The Government's announcement comes at a pivotal moment for Leeds College of Building. Demand for specialist construction education continues to grow, driven by increasing investment in housing, infrastructure, retrofit and sustainable construction, alongside the need to replace an ageing workforce and attract more young people into the industry.

The College's proposed capital expansion has been developed to respond directly to these challenges. The project will increase the College's estate by approximately one third, creating capacity for more than 2,100 additional learners and expanding specialist workshops, teaching environments, digital learning spaces and employer-led training facilities.

Rather than creating a new institution, the investment will strengthen and expand the existing CTEC, enabling Leeds College of Building to support significantly more learners, employers, schools and communities. It will create additional opportunities for employer engagement, apprenticeships, higher technical education and progression into skilled employment, ensuring more people can benefit from industry-standard facilities and training aligned to the Government's ambitions for technical education.

The proposed expansion will also strengthen the College's ability to work with schools, helping inspire young people to consider careers in construction from an earlier age and creating clearer pathways into technical education from 14 onwards. By expanding capacity, Leeds College of Building will be able to support more learners from under-represented groups, widen participation and continue its work with those at risk of becoming Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET).

The remaining step is securing the capital investment needed to deliver this nationally significant expansion. The College believes today's announcement provides a timely opportunity to align Government policy with investment in proven specialist infrastructure, ensuring the facilities exist to turn ambition into reality.

By investing in the expansion of Leeds College of Building's Construction Technical Excellence College, Government has the opportunity to build on an established national success story, increasing capacity where demand already exists and creating a flagship model for delivering high-quality technical education at scale.
