NHS Maintenance Assistant Celebrates National Healthcare Estates & Facilities Day

NHS Maintenance Assistant Celebrates National Healthcare Estates & Facilities Day
19 June 2024

Christine Latham, a maintenance assistant working for NHS Property Services, is developing her career to become a qualified plumber.

In 2022, after years as a domestic assistant, Christine attended a careers day for maintenance operatives, to explore facilities management jobs within the NHS. She felt her passion and natural talent for DIY in the home made her a perfect candidate.

"That single day changed my life! Before I could blink, I got an interview for the role of maintenance assistant. I didn't hesitate; I was ready to go for it,” Christine said. She started her new role in April 2023, working across the Cheshire and Merseyside area, and is now looking into an apprenticeship to become a qualified plumber.

"I adore everything about my job. Nothing gets the better of me. I love the variety of jobs and mucking in to deliver the best possible customer service. I enjoy a chat and a laugh with customers. I treat them the way I want to be treated. I've always got a smile to brighten their day."

Christine continued “I only wish I'd done it sooner. Imagine getting paid to do what you love? It's changed the way I look at everything. The sky's the limit for me now!"

NHS Property Services is highlighting Christine’s story to mark National Healthcare Estates & Facilities Day, an annual awareness event to recognise the essential work of estates and facilities professionals in the healthcare sector.

Christine had this to say to others contemplating a career change: "Just do it! You may discover a bigger passion than you ever imagined."
