A new scheme offering renewable energy at an affordable rate is now available to the UK creative industries.

The Bafta albert Creative Energy Scheme enables screen industries to access special rates from energy company Ecotricity, which has a not-for-dividend business model where profits are used to build new sources of green energy.

albert is an industry group owned and backed by BAFTA and is committed to making television production sustainable to support  the UK’s transition to a net-zero society. Since 2022 ,the albert certification has been mandatory for all BBC TV commissions.

According to data from albert’s latest annual report, in 2022, one-third (33 per cent) of production offices were run on renewable electricity. Although travel and transport are the biggest part of a production’s carbon footprint, albert claims that for most creative companies, changing to a renewable energy supplier is the single biggest thing they can do to reduce their carbon footprint.

Matt Scarff, Managing Director at albert, explains: “In 2023 energy consumption on location, in production offices and in studio facilities followed travel as the second-highest emission area for production. While we have seen progress to reduce impact in this area, there is still a long way to go. That is why being able to partner with Ecotricity and provide affordable green energy through the albert Creative Energy Scheme is so important. Simple and affordable solutions are how we’re going to achieve meaningful climate action.”
