BBC’s Net-Zero Targets Verified by SBTi

BBC’s Net-Zero Targets Verified by SBTi
12 August 2024

The BBC’s plans to become net-zero by 2050 have been approved by the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

The SBTi standard requires a 90 per cent reduction in emissions with no more than 10 per cent offset by 2050. The BBC pledges to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050 and reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 46.2 per cent by 2030, from a 2019/20 base year. In terms of scope 3 emissions, the BBC has committed to reduce those by 28 per cent within the same timeframe.

What are the BBC’s Plans to Achieve this?

As a founding member of the BAFTA albert Consortium and Directorate, the BBC uses the industry standard albert carbon calculator to ensure that it not only measures the carbon footprint of making programmes but also engages third-party production teams with greener ways of working.

The calculator looks at data such as accommodation locations, staff travel habits, and production processes. A production must comply with a minimum of 55 per cent of actions in the carbon action plan to achieve a 1 star albert certification, 70 per cent to achieve 2 stars and 85 per cent to achieve 3 stars.

Since 2022 ,the albert certification has been mandatory for all BBC TV commissions.

Danielle Mulder, BBC Group Director of Sustainability said: “Our Near-Term Targets paved the way to setting Long-Term Targets to achieve true net-zero by 2050.

“Adoption of the Long-Term Targets within the industry standard provides a credible approach that is underpinned by scientific rigour. Our approach to net-zero is also fully aligned to our impact on biodiversity and nature positive plans.”
