A new digital learning and wellbeing platform to connect construction workers with tailored mental health support will be piloted over the next year.
Two construction workers take their own lives every working day (on average) and Deloitte estimates this has an annual cost of £56 billion to the industry.
At a roundtable, hosted by Arup, a group of industry stakeholders, including Chris Sibley from suicide prevention charity The Ollie Foundation, explored the mental health crisis in the construction industry. The group identified the effect of construction workers’ environments as a whole on mental health, not just their workplaces, with issues such as poor housing, damp and mould.
Roundtable attendees also discussed opportunities for construction workers to connect through common ground, such as hobbies, as a low-barrier, scalable route to opening up conversations. A key focus of the pilot is on neurodiversity in construction and how this remains a significantly under-researched area.
OneHive, the parent organisation behind the TradeHive initiative, will soon launch a media campaign in collaboration with filmmaker Mori Thomson and The Ollie Foundation.
Michaela Johnson, Head of Impact, at OneHive said: “We know TradeHive won’t solve every challenge overnight. But with coordinated action and a commitment to embedding wellbeing as core infrastructure, not an afterthought, we can rewrite the future of construction. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us in the room and to those working every day to make construction safer, healthier, and more humane. This is just the beginning, but it’s a powerful one.
