The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers has named David Cooper MBE as President Elect.

David has 40 years of experience in the lift and escalator industry and has authored several books on vertical transportation, including accidents and litigation within the field. He was recognised with an MBE in 2023 for services to lift and escalator engineering.

Starting out as an apprentice with the British Railways Board, David joined lift manufacturer KONE, where he became Regional Safety Manager. David also worked as an engineer surveyor with Royal Insurance UK, conducting statutory inspections, commissioning oversight and training new engineer surveyors.

David is currently the CEO of LECS UK, and has directed many vertical transportation projects such as the Emirates Cable Car in London, the Mecca Metro, the Hastings Cliff Railway and the Luton DART. He is currently a Visiting Professor at the University of Northampton.

He said: “Throughout my career, I’ve been passionate about driving innovation and safety in the lift and escalator industry, while mentoring the next generation of engineers. I’m deeply honoured to step into the role of President Elect and look forward to working with CIBSE to support the industry’s evolution towards net zero and excellence in the built environment.”
