Woodmill and St Columba’s RC High School

The UK's largest Passivhaus education building has opened its doors to students. Woodmill High School and St Columba’s RC High School, a joint campus, accommodates 2,700 pupils and 246 staff, making it the largest building built to Passivhaus standards in the UK.

Setting a low embodied carbon value of 626 kgCO₂e/m², the site has several energy-saving features such as high-performance triple glazing, southern horizontal solar shading and East and West shading fins.

The Gascoigne Estate Regeneration

The latest phase of East London’s Gascoigne Estate regeneration is complete, marking the estate’s ambition to become one of London’s greenest, most affordable, and sustainable neighbourhoods.

The site’s design is based on high-quality Scandinavian urban design principles of equitable living, climate resilience and wellbeing. In terms of energy management, all homes are powered by a district heating system where water source heat pumps from the River Roding supply 69 per cent of the heat.

The Gascoigne Estate is also an example of a 15 minute neighbourhood, with pedestrian and cycle routes to Barking station, Barking Town Hall, the town centre, shops, library, Gascoigne Square, Abbey Grounds, four schools, the River Roding, Barking Creek and Greatfields Park.

The Wave

The University of Sheffield’s newest building has been awarded an Outstanding BREEAM accreditation. The Wave, home to much of the university’s Faculty of Social Science, is designed to be net-zero in operation. In its BREEAM assessment, the building scored particularly highly for its renewable energy systems, which include ground-source heat pumps and solar panels.

It was also praised for its provision for cycling and walking, proximity to public transport routes, outdoor landscaping, which provides public green spaces and pocket parks around the building.
