Read Full ArticleFebruary’s high performing buildings roundup includes a 15 minute city development in Shanghai and one of the largest building reuse projects in the City of London.
Another proponent of the 15 minute city concept, the Changfeng Mixed Use Development will provide daily essentials and services to the Shanghai Science and Technology Finance cluster in the Putuo District. Designed by Foster + Partners, the site is part of the Shanghai 2035 Masterplan and features retail, offices, public facilities, recreational areas and generous plazas.
The most striking part of the development is the petal-like arts centre, with 5000m² of exhibition and educational spaces. The space is inspired by the spring blessing flower that is native to the local Changfeng Park.
Planning permission has been granted for a new library at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Coinciding with the university’s 200th anniversary, the current library at All Saints on Oxford Road will be replaced with a modern building with digitally enabled teaching and research facilities and flexible break-out spaces. It will also house the University’s Special Collection Museum and the Manchester Poetry Library.
Architects Hawkins/Brown and Schmidt Hammer Lassen were commissioned to design the new building and demolition works are expected to begin in Autumn 2024. Construction is due to be completed in spring 2028, with the library ready for the start of the 2028/29 Academic year.
A retrofit and extension at 65 Gresham Street for JP Morgan Asset Management will deliver one of the largest building reuse projects in the City of London.
The extension, designed by Squire & Partners, will include over 36,800m² of Grade A office, retail and ancillary spaces. More than 70 per cent of the existing building's structure will be retained, with 95 per cent of materials recycled or reused on site with a 66 per cent whole-life carbon reduction being targeted.
