International Women in Engineering Day 2022

International Women in Engineering Day 2022
23 June 2022

On the ninth year of International Women in Engineering Day, engineers from Waterman Group and Alinea Consulting share their career stories.

Created by the Women's Engineering Society (WES) to support and inspire more young women to become engineers, scientists and leaders, this year’s theme looks to highlight the link between tackling climate change and engineering.

It aims to raise the profile of the brightest and bravest women in engineering who dare to be part of the solution and help build towards a brighter future.

In celebration of INWED22, Waterman Group spoke to a variety of their own female engineers on location at the Warwick Court refurbishment in London’s Paternoster Square as they shared an inspirational insight into their careers.

Women Make up 16.5% of All Engineers

A 2018 “Gender Disparity in Engineering” report examined gender differences in understanding of and interest in engineering. It found that girls are not only less knowledgeable about engineering and how to become an engineer, but also less likely to seek career advice on the subject.

Only 60 per cent of girls aged 11 to 14 think they could become an engineer if they wanted to, compared to 72 per cent of boys. This drops to 53 per cent in the 16 to 19 age range, where only a quarter of girls say they would ever consider a career in engineering.

As reported in March 2022 by Engineering UK, women make up 16.5 per cent of all engineers, compared to 10.5 per cent reported in 2010. This represents a 6 percentage point increase in the proportion of women in the engineering workforce – although there is still much more progress to be made here.
