Joan, the workplace management brand from Visionect, is expanding its reusable ePaper badge from visitor check-in to also cover employee identity and event badges.
One badge, configured for whichever role it's needed for, updates instead of being reprinted. The badge is the smallest ePaper screen in the Joan Workplace platform and is available from today in more than 90 countries, including the UK.
One reusable badge for visitor check-in, employee ID and access control, and event registration, giving facilities teams no label printers, no plastic reprints and nothing thrown away after a visit.
Why It Matters For Facilities And Workplace Teams
Front-of-house, security and workplace teams typically juggle three separate badge processes: printed visitor labels at reception, plastic ID cards for staff, and a reprint queue every time an event comes round. Each one generates waste and admin, and each one can fall out of date. Joan replaces all three with a single reusable ePaper badge, managed from one platform that many facilities teams already use for meeting room booking, desk reservation and visitor management.
Employee Badges: An ID That Keeps Up With The Job
Printed badges have a way of outliving the job they were made for, because reprinting one usually isn't anybody's specific responsibility. Nobody notices until it turns into a security problem: a badge that still opens a door two roles, one desk move, and a resignation letter later.
Joan employee badge is built to close that gap. An office, facilities or HR manager sets up a whole fleet of badges at once through the Joan Mobile App, and from there, any change to a person's record (a new title, a new photo, a revoked door) reaches their badge over Bluetooth the next time it's nearby, so there's no reprint order, no trip to a card shop, and no waiting around. If a badge is reported lost, Joan revokes it immediately: the access-control system cuts off door access right away, and the badge's screen updates to match the next time it's nearby.
Each badge also carries an NFC chip, so where a building's access-control system supports it, the same badge can open doors too: one object instead of a printed ID plus a separate access card. Security is one of the core design principles behind every Joan device, badges included. Whatever's true about your role today is already on the badge.
It also runs on a rechargeable battery that lasts about 200 days on a charge.

Event Badges: No Reprint Queue, Ever
A printed event badge is fixed the moment it comes off the printer, which is why a misspelled name or a last-minute substitution usually means someone standing in a reprint queue. Joan event badge doesn't have that limitation.
Hundreds can be written straight from an attendee list before the doors even open, walk-ins get the same treatment as people who registered months in advance, and any correction just means a quick re-sync rather than a full reprint. Each badge can also carry more than a name: company, role, or session access, pulled straight from the registration data, so organisers aren't limited to a name tag. That holds whether the event is a corporate conference, a trade-show stand, or something that has nothing to do with the office at all.
Visitor Badges: Nothing To Print, Nothing To Toss
Visitor management is where Joan badge started, and the badge itself is really the last step of a process that's already digital: an email invite, a name in a host's calendar. The moment a guest checks in at reception, whichever badge is in Bluetooth range writes itself with their name, company, photo, and host. They wear it for as long as they're in the building; if someone overstays their welcome and hangs onto a badge well past their expected visit, it gets flagged automatically. On the way out, they drop it back in the dock, and it clears itself for the next guest, so nobody's printing labels or holding onto a stack of used badges.
One System Behind Every Badge
Employee, event, or visitor: each badge is configured for one role at a time, but every one of them is set up and managed through Joan. That consolidation matters more now than it used to, as digital work keeps expanding faster than the physical objects people carry to prove who they are.

Luka Birsa, Co-founder & CTO of Visionect, said: "Our industry has spent a long time asking how big and how bright a screen can get. The more interesting question now is how many surfaces a building needs to show what's true, and how few of them should need a cable. ePaper didn't suddenly get great. The workplace finally needed what it's good at. The badge is the smallest screen we make, and it has the biggest job. It's ePaper with a personality: it knows who it belongs to, and it acts on that. As buildings become something software and AI can actually run, surfaces like that are where those decisions reach people. The intelligence stays invisible. The display is where it becomes real."
That's the shift underway: an identity that keeps up with the person carrying it, whether they're registering as a visitor, opening a door, checking into a meeting, or walking into a two-day conference.
