The UK's Best Office Views

The UK's Best Office Views
27 May 2021 | Updated 04 August 2021

University College London researchers say that the view from your work desk can dramatically affect productivity, so where can you find the best office views in the UK?

Studying the workspace at a city technology firm, the research team found that staff are less likely to rate their workplace environment favourably when they have higher numbers of desks within their own field of vision. Those with window desks felt more focussed and more productive.

What Makes an Attractive View?

The Data Science Lab at Warwick Business School discovered similar results in their study of what makes an outdoor space beautiful. They explored whether ratings of over 200,000 images of Great Britain from the online game ScenicOr-Not, combined with hundreds of image features extracted using a "deep learning" algorithm, might help us understand what beautiful outdoor spaces are composed of.

In urban areas, they found the following elements to be linked to beauty:

  • Canals and rivers
  • Tree-lined paths and formal gardens
  • Man-made features such as bridge-like structures and characterful buildings
