What is 2022’s Smartest City?

26 January 2023

A study from a PropTech platform has revealed the ten European cities that are best prepared for a smart future – but which city has topped the list?

Using eleven indicators of a smart city, defined by The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, ProptechOS has created a list of the European cities most adapted to emerging technologies and prepared for a smarter future.

Defining the Smart City

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) defines smart cities as “cities that leverage digitalisation and engage stakeholders to improve people’s wellbeing and build more inclusive, sustainable and resilient societies”.

The European Commission says that smart cities should go beyond technology, utilising smarter urban transport networks, upgraded water supply and waste disposal facilities and more efficient ways to light and heat buildings.

London is Europe’s Smartest City of 2022

According to ProptechOS’ methodology, London leads the way as Europe's smartest city –with Amsterdam (2nd) and Berlin (3rd) following close behind.

As the top European city, London scored highly on its technology infrastructure and green infrastructure. It has more EV charging stations (2,600) and more green certified buildings (4,948) than any other city in Europe or the United States included in the study.

London also came first across both continents for Internet of Things, with 346 IoT companies headquartered and operating there.

Smart building examples in England’s capital includes Bloom Clerkenwell, the first commercial building in the UK to achieve the highest accreditations for wellbeing, sustainability and digital connectivity and 22 Bishopsgate in the City of London financial district.

ProptechOS looked at 11 indicators of a smart city in the following categories:

  1. Tech infrastructure & connectivity
  2. Green infrastructure
  3. Tech-driven job market

These included data points like broadband speeds, the number of tech jobs per 10,000 residents, and access to electric vehicle charging points.

Each city was then awarded an overall score out of 100, as well as a score for each of the three categories.
