To mark the “Saluting Our Sisters” theme of this year’s Black History Month, ThisWeekinFM has collated perspectives from black women to highlight their crucial role in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities.

What is the Point of Black History Month?

Georgia Thompson, Chartered Civil Engineer and Constructability Engineer with Costain and Top 50 Woman in Engineering 2022 finalist, wrote on LinkedIn: “As a black person I wish we didn't need to have black history month but it has never been more crucial than when it started back in 1987.”

Her account describes the harmful role the media play in erasing Black British history and perpetuating racist tropes, and the limitations of seeing black people as a homogeneous group.
