Kier Services - Payday Strike Averted

30 August 2013 | Updated 01 January 1970

Employees of Kier Services agreed (3 September) to abandon strike action after concessions were made on plans to change their pay date. Council services in Harlow, Islington, North Tyneside, Gosport, and Stoke-on-Trent would have been affected.

For administrative reasons, Kier had wanted to change pay days from the 15th to the 28th of the month but failed, according to the UCATT union to ‘enter into meaningful negotiations.’ Employees were so incensed they voted almost three to one in favour of strike action.

Both Kier and UCATT are now somewhat coy about the extent of the ‘major concessions’ that has seen strike action averted but it is understood that the offer of ‘loans’ to ease the transition in pay days has won support.

Steve Murphy, General Secretary of UCATT, said: "Kier has listened to the genuine concerns of our members and come up with an acceptable solution which should really have been on the table at the outset.”
