Stephen Fry Joins List of Celebrities to Oppose Liverpool Street Plans

Read Full ArticleThe London Liverpool Street station upgrade project has entered a new phase as Network Rail launches a new consultation alongside plans from a new architect.
Previous plans for the station were called “insensitively designed” and “grossly opportunistic” by heritage groups and celebrities such as Stephen Fry.
Network Rail has parted ways with development partner Sellar and original architect Herzog & de Meuron, appointing ACME for a more sensitive redevelopment.
The new plans appear to draw more attention to the station’s Victorian features such as the original train shed and the neighbouring Grade II-listed Andaz Hotel (formerly the Great Eastern Hotel). The original idea to connect the hotel to the main concourse has been dropped, and the majority of the roof of the 1980s train shed extension will be retained.
There will also be a larger new concourse, and the office building above will be set back from the Andaz Hotel with a stepped roof to protect views of St Paul’s.
Robin Dobson, Group Property Director at Network Rail Property, said: "We’ve spent time talking and listening: our latest plans celebrate Victorian features including the original train shed and the Great Eastern Hotel.
" Network Rail Property is leading a new team with a new approach which will respect the station’s unique heritage - simple in design, embracing London’s mix of the old with the new.
“A new office building on top of the station concourse will generate the money to pay for these improvements.”
