Currie Community High School is the first school in Scotland built to Passivhaus standards that includes a swimming pool.

Delivered by Kier on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council, the £65 million project replaces the original 1960s building with three floors of teaching spaces, a theatre and extensive sports and leisure facilities.

This Passivhaus school is predicted to use up to 70 per cent less energy than a conventional new building, thanks to features such as triple-glazed windows, high-performance insulation, solar-oriented glazing and natural ventilation strategies. The swimming pool block is constructed using low-carbon footprint materials such as cross-laminated timber.

Currie Community High School will withstand predicted climate changes up to 2080, according to Kier.

“…It is fantastic that the school is one of the very first Passivhaus secondary schools in Scotland. I am thrilled that the school and wider community will benefit from this fantastic new building both now and well into the future”, said James Dalgliesh, City of Edinburgh Councillor.

The first Passivhaus school to be built in Scotland was Riverside Primary in Perth, which opened in 2023.
