Sir Robert McAlpine to Deliver the UK’s First City Wellbeing Resort
10 September 2025

Sir Robert McAlpine has been appointed as Construction Manager for Therme Manchester, the UK’s first city-based wellbeing resort and the largest thermal pool complex in Europe.

The resort is being built on a vacant 11.5-hectare brownfield site, south of the Bridgewater Canal in the western quadrant known as TraffordCity.

It will be the UK’s first large-scale spa facility to be constructed using LEED Platinum certification principles, a rating has already achieved by Therme Bucharest in 2016.

Alongside the thermal pool complex, there will be botanical gardens, immersive art, more than 25 water slides, the largest sauna area in the UK, multiple steam rooms and a wave pool. The spa will feature a year-round indoor climate of 33°C,

The resort is on track to open in late 2028 and set to attract up to two million visitors per year within five years.

Cllr Tom Ross, Leader of Trafford Council, said: “The Therme project is fantastic news for Trafford, and I am delighted it is being built in our borough. The resort will attract millions of visitors each year to boost our economy and will provide hundreds of construction jobs and full-time jobs.

"It supports several of our key commitments by helping provide a thriving economy, improving health and wellbeing and regenerating a vacant brownfield site in a sustainable location. It can also be reached by public transport, on foot, and by bicycle so supports our commitments to active travel and sustainability. ”
