How the New BS30480 Standard is Transforming Workplace Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Postvention.
An interview with Caroline Roodhouse, Founder, Daddy Blackbird.

Caroline Roodhouse is the author of the Amazon bestseller 'Daddy Blackbird' and a specialist in workplace suicide awareness. She offers practical guidance and resources for organisations looking to implement the BS30480 Standard on Suicide in the Workplace.

In an era where corporate social responsibility is often measured by employee wellbeing, a new global Standard is challenging organisations to go beyond traditional mental health initiatives. Caroline, a leading advocate for suicide awareness, is at the forefront of this movement, urging businesses to adopt BS30480 - the first comprehensive Standard dedicated to suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention in the workplace.

Caroline’s journey into advocacy began with personal tragedy. After losing her husband to suicide, she channelled her experience into writing, eventually becoming a committee member for the British Standard BS30480, which launched last year. Now, she is on a mission to ensure that this "gold standard" is not just downloaded but actively implemented across all sectors.

More Than Just an HR Policy

"It’s not an HR policy. Far from it," Caroline explains. Developed by 70 different organisations and experts in suicide awareness, BS30480 provides a holistic framework that covers the entire employee lifecycle - from inductions to return-to-work interviews. Unlike reactive tools such as Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) or mental health first aiders, this Standard emphasises a proactive culture of psychological safety.

While the Standard is not legally binding, Caroline warns of the significant risks of ignoring it. "Ethically, morally, and legally, it is super helpful for organisations that might find themselves in a case of negligence," she says. Beyond the legal ramifications, the reputational damage of failing to support a vulnerable employee can be "a huge catastrophe" and "massively costly in more ways than one".

A Scalable Solution for All

One of the most significant advantages of BS30480 is its adaptability. Whether a global corporation like Heathrow - an early adopter of the Standard - or a small-to-medium enterprise (SME), the framework is designed to be scalable. Caroline outlines five clear steps for implementation:

  1. Leadership Commitment: Visible backing from senior leaders and a public pledge to endorse the Standard.
  2. Building Awareness: Educating the workforce to understand the myths surrounding suicide and the appropriate language to use.
  3. Frameworks for Support: Establishing clear signposting for where employees can find help.
  4. Crisis Conversations: Training staff on how to respond when someone expresses suicidal thoughts.
  5. Postvention: Putting care in place for those impacted by a suicide.

Debunking the Myths

A critical component of the Standard is addressing common misconceptions that often hinder effective intervention. Caroline highlights the persistent myth that talking about suicide might "put the idea into someone's head".

"There is no research that suggests that is the case," she clarifies. "On the flip side, asking somebody if they’re feeling suicidal gives them the option to say yes, and that they need support. It’s a powerful question, and it’s not one to be afraid of".

From Awareness to Action

Since its launch, the BS30480 Standard has been downloaded more than 9,000 times in over 100 countries. However, Caroline emphasises that downloading the document is only the beginning. To support organisations in the transition from theory to practice, she conducts workshops and training sessions that provide practical tools, including safety plan templates for line managers and a structured three-month implementation plan.

"The Standard is not a stick to beat organisations with; it’s a helpful support tool," Caroline concludes. By making suicide awareness a 365-day commitment rather than a once-a-year headline, businesses can create a truly supportive environment where no employee has to suffer in silence.
