In 2017 there was a major fire at the Patterson Building, and over 100 firefighters and 16 fire engines attended the three-storey hospital to tackle the blaze. The building housed the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, and over 300 scientists and research staff were displaced. The Patterson has since been rebuilt into a new facility, twice the size of the previous building, at ten storeys high and with more than 25,000 sq. metres of floor space.
Dalkia UK was involved in the project, providing mechanical and electrical engineering services, and has now been awarded a new contract to deliver technical facilities management services at the newly completed facility, including management of warranties and deployment of a new site-based team. Dalkia UK will now be responsible for a range of services including technical expertise and maintenance, reception and cleaning services.
The Christie is the largest single-site cancer centre in Europe. Treating more than 60,000 patients a year, it is the UK's first accredited comprehensive cancer centre. The Paterson building is part of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre, a partnership between The Christie, Cancer Research UK and The University of Manchester.
The Patterson Building will be home to the largest concentration of scientists, doctors and nurses in Europe with 300 scientists and 400 clinicians and operational staff.
Nicolas Pagès, Regional Operations Manager at Dalkia UK said: “We are delighted to support this world-leading Cancer Research Centre for The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. It’s a privilege to work in such a collaborative environment, where individuals will receive leading-edge cancer treatments and benefit from the City of Manchester’s contribution to global medical innovation. This facility carries out research for the fight against cancer and I am confident our team will quickly become instrumental in supporting their critical activities.”
