Digital Flow: Harnessing Data To Transform The UK Pump Industry

Wayne Rose, Chief Executive at the British Pump Manufacturers Association (BPMA) looks at how digitalisation is rapidly reshaping the UK pump industry, moving it beyond traditional engineering into a more connected, data-driven future.
As expectations around efficiency, transparency and performance continue to rise, the ability to capture, analyse and act on data is becoming a defining factor in competitiveness across the sector.
For many manufacturers, the journey towards digitalisation is already well underway. Advances in design software, simulation tools and smart manufacturing processes are enabling more precise product development and improved production efficiency. However, the most significant transformation is occurring not just in how pumps are made, but in how they are specified, operated and maintained throughout their lifecycle.
A key driver of this shift is the growing emphasis on digital product information. Under frameworks such as the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), we are moving towards a future where products are accompanied by electronic nameplates and Digital Product Passports. These will provide detailed, standardised information on performance, energy use, materials and lifecycle characteristics, accessible throughout the supply chain.
For the pump industry, this represents a major step forward in transparency and traceability. Specifiers and end users will be better equipped to make informed decisions, while manufacturers will need to ensure that their data is accurate, accessible and aligned with evolving standards. This shift is not without its challenges, particularly in terms of data management, interoperability and cybersecurity, but it is ultimately a positive development that supports higher standards and better outcomes.
Beyond compliance, digital technologies are unlocking new opportunities to improve performance and reliability. The integration of sensors, connectivity and advanced analytics is enabling real-time monitoring of pumping systems, supporting predictive maintenance and reducing the risk of unplanned downtime. In sectors such as water and wastewater, energy and industrial processing, these capabilities can deliver significant operational and cost benefits.
Artificial intelligence is also beginning to play a role, helping to optimise system performance, identify inefficiencies and support more informed decision-making. Whether applied in design, manufacturing or end-use applications, these tools have the potential to enhance both quality and productivity.
However, technology alone is not the answer. To fully realise the benefits of digitalisation, organisations must also invest in skills, processes and culture. This includes ensuring that employees are equipped to work with digital tools, that data is effectively managed and that systems are integrated in a way that delivers meaningful insight rather than complexity.
At the BPMA, we are supporting our members through this transition by providing guidance, promoting best practice and facilitating knowledge sharing across the industry. As digitalisation accelerates, collaboration will be essential to ensure consistency, interoperability and the development of common standards.
The move towards a data-driven industry is not optional — it is inevitable. Those organisations that embrace digitalisation strategically will be better positioned to improve efficiency, enhance customer value and compete in an increasingly global market.
Looking ahead, the UK pump industry has a clear opportunity to harness the power of data to drive innovation and performance. By combining engineering excellence with digital capability, the sector can continue to evolve and play a critical role in supporting modern, sustainable infrastructure.
