Construction Begins on one of Europe’s Largest Battery Energy Storage Systems

Construction is now underway at the Staythorpe Battery Energy Storage System in Newark, Nottinghamshire.

Mitie Power & Grid, via G2 Energy, is leading the design and build of the 360MW/720MWh system and 400kV grid substation, which will store enough renewable energy to power over 95,000 homes for a full day.

Battery Energy Storage Systems, or BESSs, store excess electricity during low-demand periods and release it when demand is higher. According to the government’s Clean Power Action Plan, it is expected that 23–27 GW of battery storage will be needed by 2030 to support renewable power, up from 4.5 GW in 2024.

The £71.5 million contract was awarded to Mitie Power & Grid by renewable energy developer Elements Green in February 2025. Around 60 jobs are expected to be created during the build phase.

Elements Green has committed to delivering at least 25.7 per cent biodiversity net gain through 12 acres of new woodland and wildflower meadows, and by planting 129 trees.

The project is scheduled to be fully operational by mid-2027 and has a planned lifespan of 40 years.
