The popularity of podcasts is also set to increase, with forecasts predicting close to 20 million listeners by 2024.

As well as providing light relief, a companion to exercise or a welcome addition to the morning commute, podcasts can also be used for education, or as part of a personal development plan.

Whether you’re an experienced podcast subscriber or a newbie, here are five podcasts to get you started, all related to the workplace and the wider built environment

1. WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork

Produced by podcast giant Wondery, WeCrashed is the story of a unicorn office space company, a failed IPO, and its plan to revolutionise the workplace experience.

This six-part podcast series takes the listener through WeWork’s story, covering how the company’s planned initial public offering collapsed when investors rejected its $20 billion valuation. The series also covers the resignation of WeWork’s CEO Adam Neumann.

Wondery describes the series as: “a story of hope and hubris, big money and bigger screwups, and the lengths people will go to chase unicorns”

2. Chat FM

Run by the Emerging Workplace Leaders group, Chat FM is billed as a place to learn about everything to do with leadership in FM by hearing from various voices throughout the industry.

Each week, the Co-Chair of the Emerging Workplace Leaders and Operations Director for the Churchill Group, Phil Matis, is joined by sector professionals to discuss topics such as digitisation of the industry, robotics and recruitment.

3. EMEX

EMEX, the net-zero and energy management expo has released several of its 2021 seminars as a podcast series.

The series aims to support the collective ambition to accelerate the race to net-zero and features highlights including insights from The King’s Cross Estate and how government property is looking to decarbonise its estate.

4. Women Build

Run alongside the Female Frontiers: Powered by WAN Awards, this podcast gives a voice to inspirational women in the global architecture arena, operating at all levels in the industry.

Women Build also actively champions those who want to improve diversity within the industry.

The podcast covers topics such as importance of biophilic design, COVID-19 protection in global workplace interiors and how designing for living on the Moon and Mars can teach us more about how we should be building for Earth.

5. Urban Exchange

Urban Exchange: Cities on the Frontlines is the podcast series from SmartCitiesWorld and the Resilient Cities Network (R-Cities).

Its USP is delivering frank and open conversations between international city leaders and industry practitioners that share ideas to solve urban challenges. The podcast provides a platform for the people driving urban innovation and change to share their ideas and insights with those that need them most.

Recent podcast guests include Mayor of Miami, Francis Suarez and Glasgow City Council leader, Susan Aitken.
