What is the facilities management sector doing to celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day is an annual awareness today with the aiming of forging a gender-equal world, celebrating women's achievements and increasing visibility, whilst calling out inequality. This year's theme is: #ChooseToChallenge, encouraging us all to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality.

Let’s take a look at what organisations in the FM industry are doing to commemorate this day.

Sodexo - Helping Female Prison Leavers

Sodexo is launching a series of virtual engagement events designed to help female prison leavers get back into employment.

The sessions will be delivered as part of Sodexo’s SheWorks programme, aimed at introducing women to new job opportunities they may not have previously considered and will focus on female offenders approaching prison release.

Virtual sessions will be delivered in two of Sodexo’s female prisons, HMP Bronzefield in Surrey and HMP Peterborough, as well as HMP Drake Hall in Staffordshire.

Each event will include guest speakers from across Sodexo’s business talking about their jobs and careers. There will also be an opportunity to identify job opportunities with partner organisations and employability guidance and advice.

Working in partnership with New Futures Network, a department of the Ministry of Justice, suitable participants, have been identified for the programme and will be inspired to think about their interests and options once released.

phs Launches Scheme to Inspire Future Female Leaders

Caerphilly-based facilities services provider phs Group has announced a new scheme to inspire the next generation of female leaders in the industry in Wales to mark International Women’s Day.

Partnering with Welsh equality charity Chwarae Teg (Fair Play), phs is running a new six-month Leadership and Management programme to equip women employees with the skills and qualifications to progress within the business. A total of 19 staff have signed up for the inaugural scheme which offers fortnightly training sessions delivered by Chwarae Teg as part of its Agile Nation2 Career Development Programme, alongside mentorship support from female leaders and managers across the business. After completion, staff will have achieved the Level 2 ILM Award in Leadership and Team Skills.

Chwarae Teg is a Welsh gender equality charity with the core mission of ensuring women in Wales can enter the workplace, develop their skills and build rewarding careers. The Agile Nation2 scheme is fully funded by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government to improve the position of women in the workplace.
