Kier Group has been appointed to deliver FM services at a new cancer hospital in Cardiff, via its place on the ACORN consortium.

The new Velindre Cancer Centre will replace the current facility, which is more than 68 years old and serves a population of 1.7 million people.

Velindre University NHS Trust awarded the design, build, finance and maintenance contract to a consortium team made up of Kajima Partnerships, Sacyr, Abrdn, Andrew Scott, Kier Facilities Services, White Arkitekter, Arup, MJ Medical, Turley, Studio Response, Camlins Landscape Architects, Osborne Clarke, Operis and Confab Lab.

Designed by White Arkitekte, the centre is due to open in 2027 and will target a BREEAM Excellent rating. Kier’s facilities management contract starts in April of that year, covering mechanical and electrical maintenance, building fabric maintenance, fire systems and reactive maintenance, energy management, drainage systems, digital management, contract management reporting, health and safety, and provision of help desk services.

Paul Jones, Operations Director for Kier Places said: "The Velindre Cancer Centre is already a vital healthcare facility in Wales. To be part of the consortium which is developing a new state-of-the-art facility to extend these services to even more cancer patients, and with such a focus on innovation and environmental impact, is a real privilege and we’re delighted to be on board."

Steve Ham, Chief Executive of Velindre University NHS Trust added: “Our ambition for the design of the new centre has been clear from the outset – we want to build a cancer centre for the future which is the greenest in the UK. We were delighted with the proposals that were put forward and are grateful to the bidders for their extraordinary commitment to the competitive dialogue process. We asked for a design that makes people feel good, that is strong, long-lasting, flexible and efficient. We have got that – and so much more. We look forward to welcoming our first patient into the new centre.”

The contract will run for 25 years and is to be delivered by Kier Places, the group’s workplace and building solutions arm.
