Pride Month 2024 – Resources for Facilities Managers

Pride Month 2024 – Resources for Facilities Managers

Take action this Pride Month and educate yourself with these resources for facilities and workplace managers.

Although Pride Month provides an opportunity to platform LGBTQIA+ inclusion discussions, safe and supportive workplaces for LGBTQIA+ colleagues must be prioritised all year round.

Homophobia, biphobia and transphobia are still experienced in the workplace, despite LGBTQIA+ workers being protected by law from discrimination and harassment. And it remains a disturbing fact that same-sex relationships are criminalised in 64 jurisdictions and 12 countries still impose the death penalty for same-sex sexual activity.

According to the Deloitte Global 2023 LGBT+ Inclusion at Work report, visible and active allyship in the workplace can be crucial. According to survey figures, six in ten (61 per cent) people who are out at work to at least some colleagues, and almost seven in 10 of those who are out about their gender identity, say that allyship helps them to be out.

There are many practical ways that we can support LGBTQIA+ inclusion and equity on an individual level. Let’s take a look at some simple places to start:

Explore the LGBT+ in FM Network Guides

The LGBT+ in FM network was established in 2016 to promote fairness, inclusion and respect for LGBTQIA+ people working in the facilities management industry. Their mission is to make the facilities management sector the most attractive, inclusive and supportive industry for the LGBT+ community in the UK and Ireland.

The group has produced several guides tailored specifically for facilities management professionals. From inclusive recruitment best practices to a guide to inclusive toilets for FMs, their resources are a great place to start for businesses.

Use the Minus 18 Pronouns Tool

Language matters, and communicating in a respectful way can help everyone to contribute to the conversation.  An Australian LGBTQIA+ rights group has created an interactive tool to help people understand how to use pronouns correctly:

Educate Yourself With Training Videos

With a LinkedIn Premium account, you can use their learning platform to educate yourself on LGBTQIA+ inclusion. As well as general content for beginners, there are deep dives on correcting disrespectful language and exploring the LGBTQIA+ acronym.
