The guide covers a wide range of topics, including what it means to be an ally and why it is crucial in today’s world.
Active allyship of LGBTQIA+ people in the workplace isn’t just about doing the right thing, it’s powerful. According to the Deloitte Global 2023 LGBT+ Inclusion at Work report, visible and active allyship in the workplace can be crucial. According to survey figures, six in ten (61 per cent) people who are out at work to at least some colleagues, and almost seven in 10 of those who are out about their gender identity, say that allyship helps them to be out.
For those working in FM, who are present in so many of our public buildings and spaces, fostering an atmosphere of support for marginalised people sets a crucial precedent.
Being an ally is not a status or a static identity, it’s active participation in supporting a group that you are not part of. It’s also a process of learning and an awareness that nobody is perfect, and the ability to accept criticism with grace.
Allies listen to the group they support, make an effort to better understand their struggles, and use their voice and influence to amplify marginalised voices.
The LGBT+ in FM Allyship Guide provides support and guidance on how to be an active listener, recognising and addressing our own biases and how to create environments where everyone can thrive. The LGBT+ in FM network was established in 2016 to promote fairness, inclusion and respect for LGBTQIA+ people working in the facilities management industry. Their mission is to make the facilities management sector the most attractive, inclusive and supportive industry for the LGBT+ community in the UK and Ireland.
