Spotlight Interview – JobOppO

22 October 2021 | Updated 10 November 2021

JobOppO is an employment community, connecting experienced veterans with employers who appreciate and value the skills, knowledge and attitude of those who have served and the benefit they can bring to their organisation. We spoke to Garrath Williams about the organisation, the suitability of military skills for FM, and their event at the end of October.

The organisation was founded due to a lack of guidance available for people post-service. “Being the guy he is, [Kayam Iqbal] thought if [he] was struggling other people will be struggling, so [he] would try and do something about that,” said Garrath Williams. Run by ex-military to serve ex-military, they endeavour also to build veteran confidence through offering structured support and educating companies on the qualities their members bring to the table, which bridges a vital gap between the armed forces and new business opportunities.

JobOppO recently experienced some well-deserved growth which has allowed people like Garrath to come on board in management and investments to be made into progressing the direction of the organisation – this has resulted in the build of an app-based community platform, which they hope will benefit their members with some autonomy in helping themselves and others in their community.

“[We] donate ten per cent of revenue to the OppO foundation, which is then designated to veterans or small veteran groups that are in need,” said Garrath. “Last year some that were struggling were provided with new boilers, and [we’ve] worked on getting individuals new wheelchairs in order to compete in the Paralympics.”

Another part of this refreshed mission is to spread the awareness of military experience applications, in order to foster new opportunities. For this reason, we hosted a “Journey into FM” event with JobOppO at the Churchill War Rooms in London on 28 October, designed specifically to engage with service leavers and industry leaders to cultivate new working relationships that benefit both.
