Mitie has been awarded an integrated FM contract with the Co-op and Viridor given a waste management contract with the Broadland Housing Group

Recycling Top Of List For Waste Collection Contract

The Broadland Housing Group has awarded Viridor a two year waste management contract for 5,000 family homes, apartments, sheltered housing and housing with care throughout Norfolk and North Suffolk.

Broadland will work with Viridor to raise awareness among its staff to ensure they segregate and recycle as much material as possible, with the non-recyclable (residual) waste going to Viridor’s energy recovery facilities at Ardley in Oxfordshire and Peterborough to create renewable energy.

Broadland’s Group Procurement Manager Barry Ashby said the company, which is governed by a board of voluntary unpaid members, was persuaded to move away from multiple waste management contracts to a single contract with Viridor because of the holistic waste management approach the company offered.

He said: “The decision to accept the Viridor tender was unanimous.  Broadland wants to focus on a zero to landfill approach to waste  management and our company is keen to raise awareness within our own organisation about maximising our recycling opportunities and once this resource has been removed, take the waste that remains and give it a green purpose – low carbon electricity.”

Viridor sent enough energy to the national grid last year to power 380,000 homes – the equivalent of a city the size of Leeds.

Cooperating With The Co-Op

Mitie has been awarded a three year contract with the Co-op following a competitive tender process.

The contract covers cleaning, landscaping, engineering services, security, front of house, catering and waste. These services will be delivered to reflect the Co-op's commitment to sustainability and employee wellbeing.

The Co-op's support centre in Manchester, One Angel Square, is one of Europe’s most sustainable buildings and is built to a BREEAM outstanding rating, achieving a record BREEAM score on opening.

Mitie’s new contract supersedes multiple existing separate facilities contracts. Mitie will oversee facilities management for the Co-op’s corporate offices and data centres, which combined cover over 33,000sq.m.

Mitie will make a significant investment in implementing its Connected Workspace technology at One Angel Square and the Co-op and Mitie will collaboratively implement tailored technology to capture and manage building usage data. This includes monitoring a number of environmental elements such as temperature and occupancy. Mitie will harness this data and use the insight to make the Co-op’s buildings smarter and working life better for its employees. The initiatives will improve space utilisation for workstations and meeting rooms, and enhance employee well-being through active environment control and well-being monitoring.

Gather & Gather, Mitie’s catering business will introduce pop-ups and food truck events in partnership with local suppliers to bring innovation and variety to lunch time breaks. Mitie also provides cleaning and winter services for around 1,500 Co-op stores and Funeralcare homes across the UK. To date the landscaping team has already carried out over 30,000 gritting visits ensuring Co-op car parks and surrounding environs are safe for Co-op colleagues and customers.
