Sodexo is opening the minds of directors to disability inclusion while other FM companies are employing technology and standards to make their work a little more transparent.

Open Your Mind - Driving Disability Inclusion

Sodexo has partnered with the Business Disability Forum and the Global Business and Disability Network to host its first disability themed conference, Open Your Mind: Driving Disability Inclusion.

On February 13, the conference brought together experts from industry and the NGO community and was led by Meg Horsburgh, Sodexo UK & Ireland head of Diversity & Inclusion. The event's keynote speaker was Kate Nash, OBE, creator and CEO of PurpleSpace, a networking and professional development hub for disabled employees.

Nash said: “It is important for large organisations to create change by developing a systematic approach, rather than seeing disability inclusion as a ‘project’ or ‘initiative’. Those that get it right have a clear route-map and an end in sight. Learning directly from your own disabled people is the most authentic way of finding out where the challenges are, so you can develop the right priorities for your business. The business community is placed to drive change and get it right for disabled customers and employees."

Horsburgh added: “At Sodexo, we want to learn from others, share our experiences and have honest conversations about how to provide more inclusive environments for people with disabilities. Events like this are so valuable - we’re planning to do more this year in other global locations.”

Getting Connected

Mitie has won a five year deal with specialist distribution and logistics company Connect Group following a competitive tender process.

Through an integrated facilities management contract, Mitie will manage a range of services including engineering, cleaning, security, reception and landscaping across 78 distribution centres and at the Connect Group's headquarters in Swindon, Wiltshire.

The new relationship will bring all Connect Group’s FM services together, replacing the existing local level arrangements.

Connect Group operates under the brands Smiths News and Tuffnells.

Mitie will deploy their Direct Audits system for the delivery of engineering service (designed to keep a close check on the condition of assets) and will also be utilising their remote security centre MiTec. Operating from Northern Ireland, MiTec offers a comprehensive intruder and fire alarm monitoring service.

Waste Reduction Strategy

Mitie will boost sustainability for food wholesaler Bidfood as part of a new five year contract covering all aspects of waste management.

A key element of a waste reduction strategy will see Mitie implementing a circular economy, making sure excess food is used by charities and other organisations, rather than being thrown away.

As part of the contract Mitie will trial new waste management technology that will enable Bidfood to reduce its overall waste output and improve recycling rates. These trials will include food waste dryers, which remove water from food to produce a dried material used to fertilise soil; bin sensors, which monitor fill levels to improve the efficiency of collections and reverse vending machines, which accept used cans and bottles so that they can be sorted and recycled.

In addition, Mitie has already started to support Bidfood, in their Choose to Reuse school campaign, which raises awareness on how best to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic.

ISO 55001 Accreditation

UBS, a key client of ISS, has been awarded ISO 55001 accreditation for asset management.

UBS has an integrated facilities management contract with ISS and the organisations worked in partnership to achieve the accreditation.

ISS gained sponsorship from UBS and drafted an initial outline plan in September 2017. In December 2017 a gap analysis was completed by an independent auditor and from this gap analysis, an action and responsibility plan was produced. After filling in the gaps, the ISS team initiated stage one of the two stage process. Stage one is a formal assessment of the documentation and filing systems and also provides a check for compliant readiness for the final stage two audit.

The feedback from the stage one audit highlighted some major signposting and procedures, with observations which needed resolution before the second stage. The site and central teams worked together to complete these areas.

Stage two in September 2018 was more focused and another audit took place. Following an intense two days, the ISO 55001 certificate was awarded in September.

Martin Harvey, Director of Engineering & Asset Management at ISS, said: “The real benefit of the accreditation is that there is now a complete and comprehensive asset management policy and associated delivery practises which enables the Operational Team to manage and maintain the physical assets of our client UBS. Delivery of detailed CAFM systems and planned frequency-based maintenance is seen as the ill-informed approach to maintenance in the 21st century. From a people point of view, the standard focuses on people, their competencies and training and also looks at succession planning. And most importantly, UBS knows that they have a capable and competent service partner running their buildings and operating in the most efficient way.”
