CIPD Research Says 52% of Bosses Don’t Think Young People are Prepared for World of Work

CIPD Research Says 52% of Bosses Don’t Think Young People are Prepared for World of Work
06 December 2024

A survey of 2,000 UK employers shows that just one in four employers recruiting young people think they are well-prepared for the world of work.

52 per cent don’t think that young people are generally well-prepared for the world of work, and 64 per cent think young people often lack important social skills in the workplace and don’t know how to behave.

56 per cent think that young workers are more difficult to manage than previous generations and 34 per cent don’t think young people are generally good communicators in the workplace.

Born between 1997 and 2012, Generation Z currently makes up 30 per cent of the world’s population and will account for 27 per cent of the workforce by 2025. The first generation to grow up with no recollection of a pre-internet world, they are known as the first digital generation.

The CIPD believes that the poor perception of young people is down to a decline in apprenticeship opportunities, calling for an Apprenticeship Guarantee for all 16-24 year olds.

Lizzie Crowley, Senior Skills Adviser at the CIPD said: “Too many young people are disadvantaged because they have limited opportunities to develop an understanding of what’s expected in the workplace, or to take that first step into employment.

“There needs to be bolder action from the government to rebalance the youth labour market by making apprenticeships a viable alternative to university, addressing the collapse in apprenticeships in recent years. Currently, just 6 per cent of young people participate in an apprenticeship each year, and we need this figure to be much higher.”
