Google has announced that it will purchase the Central St Giles site where it is currently a tenant.

MD of Google UK & Ireland Ronan Harris told the BBC: "We want to reinvigorate the work environment. We're making this commitment to rebuild. We're buying these buildings and we're keen to see everybody come back in and see a vibrant workspace again.”

The move indicates confidence in bricks and mortar office space, as Plan B restrictions continue to ease in the UK.

£871 Million Deal

The £871 million deal has been rumoured since October 2020, when it was reported that Google had entered into negotiations to buy the development in Holborn from joint owners Legal & General Group and Mitsubishi Estate.

Google already lets around 40 per cent of the property, a 14,800m² fit-out that they have occupied since 2011.

Central Saint Giles is a colourful mixed-use development and one of the largest in the West End. Designed by Renzo Piano, the building also includes retail, residential and an outdoor public Piazza.

The building has an Excellent BREEAM rating and 60 per cent of the rainwater that falls on office roofs and the piazza is collected and reused.
