A new BBC series helping amateur designers to take on a garden at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show 2015 has been praised.

The London College of Garden Design (LCGD) has welcomed the series because it will assist these designers achieve recognition

“The new series is a great way of highlighting careers in garden design and can only lead to encouraging new people to come into the profession,” explained Andrew Fisher Tomlin, Director, LCGD and RHS Judge. “We have already seen an increase in enquiries for our Garden Design Diploma, following the success of Paul Harris, one of our graduates, who is competing for the prize of a space at Chelsea.”

Many of the LCGD’s tutors are exhibiting at Chelsea this year, including Jo Thompson with M&G, Adam Frost with Homebase and Andrew Wilson with Wellington College. Other lecturers, including Sarah Eberle, are also there with Fresh and Artisan gardens.

All LCGD students get the chance to help build gardens and at least five graduates will be exhibiting at RHS shows this year.

Fisher Tomlin added: “Exhibiting show gardens is a great way of benchmarking yourself against the best in the industry.”

Mr Fisher Tomlin stated that there had been some negative comments from parts of the profession but he believed most came from designers who have never taken up the challenge of exhibiting a show garden. “Generally, we have found overwhelming support for the RHS in highlighting garden design as a career and for taking a contemporary approach to getting people to train to be a garden designer,” he concluded.
