Stepping Out of the Ordinary on World FM Day

BIFM, RICS and Global FM have all done their bit on World FM Day to highlight how FM professionals, empower people to reach their full potential and in turn create a productive world

Outsourcing Across Borders is the key theme of the latest FM Leaders Forum to be released by the British Institute of Facilities Management and the first by the Institute’s International Special Interest Group (ISIG).

Chair of the ISIG Steve Gladwin said: “It is evident that in an increasingly globalised world there are great opportunities for FM providers wanting to provide services in new international markets. We wanted to discuss the challenges of investing in businesses outside of the UK and the pitfalls and prospects available to organisations looking to expand their geographic reach. In doing so we wanted to identify the learnings so that we can continue to support others who are considering taking this step.”

As part of Forum discussions chaired by Steve Gladwin it was established that further research should be carried out to benchmark ‘market maturities’ in order to establish the level of a country’s business sophistication and its adoption of UK FM practices, particularly with preference to UK health and safety practices.

Gladwin said: “As with any developing business relationship between supplier and client, consultation and collaboration is essential. But for successful FM outsourcing internationally it is critical. What has became apparent is that problems are being created by the absence of a standard FM contract. Because of the variance in business practices this means there is no set of defined terms that all involved can agree upon. Therefore the clarity of contract is of vital importance as so much UK business terminology can be easily misinterpreted abroad.”

Global FM announces Awards of Excellence in Facilities Management 2016 Winners

 Global FM, the worldwide alliance of facilities management membership organisations, has announce the Global FM Awards of Excellence in Facilities Management 2016 winners as part of World FM Day – its worldwide celebration of facilities management which takes/took place July 13.

“The Global FM Excellence in FM Awards elevates the very best facilities management projects to a global stage. All the submissions are award winners in their own right, as our member organisations select their very best candidates from their organisations over the past year. All of the entries highlight the role that FM professionals play in supporting and enabling business performance,” said Duncan Waddell, Chairman of Global FM.


The 2016 winners are:

  • Platinum Award of Excellence in FM – FMA Australia – Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Australia.
  • Gold Award of Excellence in FM – BIFM - Heathrow Airport Limited, UK.
  • Silver Award of Excellence in FM – IFMA - Centostazioni, Italy.

FM helps preserve Britain’s history

To coincide with World FM Day, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has placed a spotlight on the facilities management challenge facing National Museums Liverpool (NML) as they manage meeting carbon footprint targets whilst preserving precious artefacts. From rare beetles, to a lifejacket from the Titanic, keeping these exhibits at an optimum temperature and humidity is essential to preserve the irreplaceable items – the type of FM challenge being highlighted on World FM Day.

Paul Bagust UK Director of Commercial Property Professional Group at RICS said: “Focussing on necessary outputs, such as delivering a controlled environment within target levels has encouraged a hugely innovative and alternative approach to strategic facilities management. This strategic partnership approach between FM provider Integral UK Limited and NML has resulted in a reduction in energy use while maintaining optimum humidity and temperature targets. As a result, NML were joint first in their UK Carbon Reduction National League Table.

“Using FM expertise, effective technology and systems, a long-term partnership approach to asset and estates management has delivered tangible results from both a cost and socio-economic value perspective – this is what strategic facilities management is all about.”

In tackling the problem, Integral had to consider the historical nature of the buildings which meant the mechanical and electrical infrastructure was old and often the source of inefficient energy performance. Additionally, the environments needed to preserve valuable artwork and collections and the constant footfall of people presented a complex maintenance delivery challenge.

Contract Manager for Integral, Peter Beatham said: “Following an initial assessment of all NML assets, Integral offered a solution which employs the use of Building Management Systems that monitors and alerts us to equipment faults remotely so engineers can investigate immediately. They also allow us to efficiently manage the required environment controls and demonstrate compliance with the British Standards established to preserve cultural collections. Meeting the Standard means NML can secure new and loaned exhibits attracting more visitors.”

Estates Manager for National Museums Liverpool, Chris Bailey said: “There are often conflicting environmental requirements between our collections and visitors, so from an estate point of view, we have to strive to get that balance right most of the time. For example, heating for a visitor could mean drying for a painting, which risks damage. Understanding these differences is just the beginning of the challenge.”

National Museums Liverpool is one case study in a set of six RICS will launch later this month to demonstrate the value of FM and the integral role played by strategic facilities management in successful running of businesses from Museums to a Hotel complex.
