Time Wates Moved on North East

31 July 2015 | Updated 01 January 1970

The Wates Group has commenced the next step in its expansion plans that will target new markets across the North East of England.

The move will see Wates move into new sectors in the region, building on the presence of Wates Living Space in the North East.

This includes new build development and property maintenance for social landlords across Durham and Newcastle.

On top of that, it has identified increased opportunities in Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Teesside and Tyneside, targeting new projects in commercial, manufacturing and public sector markets while increasing its presence on regional procurement frameworks.

Forming part of the business’ plans to double turnover to £2 billion, the expansion will see Wates Construction build on its existing portfolio of Yorkshire-based public and private sector projects, including Leeds’ £100 million Central Square office and Haribo’s new £35 million Wakefield production facility.

Also forming part of Wates Group’s strategic growth plan, the business is currently in preliminary agreement with York-based Shepherd Group on the acquisition of Shepherd Engineering Services, Shepherd FM and a significant number of contracts and frameworks from Shepherd Construction.

The announcement follows the appointment of Paul Dodsworth as Wates Construction’s Business Unit Director, Yorkshire and North East, in April this year. He joined Wates from Bowmer & Kirkland where he spent eight years as Construction Director overseeing projects in the North East and Scotland. Explaining his hopes for the expansion, he commented: “We’re a contractor with a profound focus on local procurement and keeping our sub-contractors at the forefront of our business will allow us to ensure that our growth, their growth, and that of our industry, is sustainable.”
